NBC’s ‘Nightly News with Brian Williams’ Features Autism-Friendly Performance of Disney’s ‘The Lion King’

On Monday, October 3, NBC’s Nightly News with Brian Williams focused their popular “Making a Difference” segment on the autism-friendly performance of Disney’s The Lion King, which was held on Sunday, October 2. Autism Speaks was featured in the NBC piece. The Theatre Development Fund (TDF), a not-for-profit performing arts service organization whose mission includes making theatre accessible for all audiences, piloted the “Autism Theatre Initiative,” to make theatre accessible to children and adults affected by autism, and their families. This was the first ever autism-friendly performance in Broadway history and our own Lisa Goring, vice president of Family Services, provided input and recommendations to TDF and Disney on what alterations could be made to the show to ensure an autism-friendly production for individuals with autism.

I watched and it was wonderful. So glad that people are so aware and willing to give those with Autism such an opportunity.

My family was lucky enough to attend this show! My husband and I and our two boys who are both affected with Autism. This event was truly a magical experience that will be kept in our hearts forever. The expressions on my childrens’ faces (one who is non-verbal) was just priceless. Something we all dream of experiencing as parents. With the idea from the Theatre Development Fund, this otherwise unobtainable dream came true for us! The attention to detail was outstanding. We graciously and genuinely thank the many people involved in making this performance happen. What a huge success for everyone! Bravo!

I think that this was a great decision that the Autism Theatre Initiative came up with. It’s Autism friendly! So instead of an Autism child or adult trying to go see The Lion King on broadway and it bother them because of all their senses workin double time and all at once, they can go and just enjoy watchin it! I love how even some of the kids are non-verbal how on their face you can just tell that they enjoyed the show! Their faces light up! I’m sure it’s a great experience for them!
